Raanjhanaa is a 2013 Indian romantic drama film directed by A.L. Vijay and produced by Dil Raju featuring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor and Shekar Kapur in lead roles. The film follows Cherry (Sonam Kapoor) who falls in love with Aadesh (Dhanush), a struggling musician, and has to fight her family’s tradition of suitable matches to marry him. It was released on 8 September 2013 worldwide and received positive reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the cast, notably Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor's for balancing their characters with subtlety yet expression. Cherry, a medical student, is introduced to Aadesh, a struggling musician. The duo are fast friends and soon fall in love, but their families disapprove of them being together. As Cherry's family disown her for her love affair with Aadesh, she goes on to marry another man, Vivek. The couple have a daughter named Priya who is the face of the film during several scenes. Priya goes missing after being asked to sing at her school's 100th anniversary celebration function where Cherry's brother-in-law loves to play the guitar and sings one of his songs which he had gifted her. Vijay announced that he would be making his next venture with Mani Ratnam's production company Madras Talkies, which would be his second Tamil film after "Pazhani" (2006). Vijay initially announced the film to be a love story and that it would be set in Mumbai. The project was later shelved and Vijay moved on to other projects, including "Minsara Kanavu", "Nenjathai Killadai", and "Raanjhanaa". During his visit to Mumbai in October 2012, Vijay finally finalised his script for the film, which he had been working on from 2007 until then. Vijay revealed that he had a difficult time finding a suitable actress for the lead role as there were many actresses who were willing to play the role but due to various reasons were unable to accept it. After two years, Vijay finally selected Sonam Kapoor as the lead actress and revealed that she would be teaming up with him for the second time after "Pazhani". The film ultimately began production in October 2012, and was later released on 8 September 2013. The first schedule of the film took place in Kochi, Kerala from 22 November 2012 to 20 December 2012. Filming locations included Alton and Jaffna and shooting lasted for 21 days. Principal photography of the film ended by December 23, 2012.
